My research and teaching focus on social work education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, high-impact pedagogical practices, and the thoughtful integration of technology in professional education. What is my approach to consultation?
With more than 15 years of experience in higher education, my consulting work is grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning and high-impact, evidence-informed pedagogy. I support faculty, academic leaders, and institutions in designing meaningful learning experiences, integrating technology thoughtfully, and advancing teaching-centered scholarship. Holding a PhD in Social Work, I bring deep expertise in undergraduate and graduate social work education, including curriculum design, accreditation alignment, faculty development, program leadership, and educational innovation.
What are my areas of consultation?
I offer consultation to individual educators, faculty teams, departments, and institutions in the following areas:
- Teaching with Technology: I support educators in integrating digital tools in ways that enhance learning rather than distract from it. In 2012, I received a national award for innovative teaching for my work incorporating social media into a social welfare policy course. Since then, I have published extensively on technology in higher education, co-authored the book Teaching Social Work with Digital Technology, and contributed to the design and delivery of online undergraduate and graduate programs. My consulting emphasizes pedagogical purpose, accessibility, and sustainability.
- Interprofessional Education and Simulation: I consult on the design and facilitation of interprofessional education and simulation-based learning experiences, particularly in health and helping professions. As a faculty scholar in interprofessional education and simulation, I have led and co-designed standardized patient simulations, large-scale interprofessional learning activities, and faculty development initiatives. My work is informed by advanced training in simulation practice and debriefing methodologies.
- Community-Engaged and Service-Learning Pedagogy: High-impact, community-engaged learning is central to my teaching philosophy. I routinely teach service-learning courses and provide consultation to faculty who are developing or refining community-engaged curricula. As a Service Learning Fellow, I have mentored educators across disciplines in designing courses that align academic learning with community partnerships, ethical engagement, and reflective practice.
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): My primary research focus is the scholarship of teaching and learning, with an emphasis on improving how educators engage students in meaningful, applied learning. I consult with faculty and academic units on designing SoTL projects, aligning teaching innovations with research questions, and translating teaching practice into publishable scholarship. My tenure and promotion were grounded in this body of work.
